Central Victoria

Central Victoria has a violent history including the gold rush and bush rangers such as the Ned Kelly gang. Kyneton and Bendigo are wonderful towns with impressive historical buildings such as Bendigo's Victorian style Shamrock Hotel with its refined dining. Heathcote is another old-worldly town known for its world famous Shiraz. This area offers excellent wineries and gourmet dining. This regions activities include horse riding, golf, hiking, cycling, fishing, boating and probably their most popular activity, wine tasting. Other pretty towns worth visiting include Kilmore, Gisborne, Woodend, Euroa plus the picturesque area of the Macedon Ranges. Castlemaine is another quaint town which still has mud brick miners houses and is renowned for its art scene, gold rush history and reputation as a fine food destination. While in Castlemaine, browse the local artist studios and you will find local sculptures, ceramics, jewellery, paintings and textiles. Experience Castlemaine's heritage by taking in a concert at Australia's oldest mainland theatre the "Theatre Royal". Other towns near Castlemaine such as Maldon and Harcourt plus a bit further west Maryborough all have their own unique historical attractions.
