South West Wilderness

Portions of this area is World Heritage listed as being part of the natural and cultural heritage of the world community. The Wilderness World Heritage area covers over 1.4 million hectares and is one of the last true wilderness regions. This spectacular rugged terrain of South West Tasmania can be accessed by the Gordon River Road (B21). There is much to see and numerous picnic spots travelling on the Gordon River Road to Lake Gordon and beyond to Lake Pedder. Both lakes provide good boating and kayaking opportunities, with several launching areas.Further south is the more populated stunning town of Strahan on the majestic Gordon River. Strahan has a colourful history initially being a pioneer town of miners, bushmen, railway men and fisherman. A must while in Strahan is to cruise on the Lady Franklin II down the Gordon River and through the amazing narrow and turbulent Hell's Gates. Restaurants are aplenty offering succulent local West Coast lobster for a real treat, or try fresh salmon or trout. Only 40 kms north east is the intriguing township of Queenstown. This mining town of 2500 people is home to the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Company, the West Coast Wilderness Railway and nearby mines of Rosebery, Renison Bell and Henty Gold Mine.
