The Murray River region of South Australia starts from the border of South Australia and Victoria, and winds its way through many river towns commencing with Renmark. The Murray feeds an expansive waterway system including several lakes and lagoons, notably Lake Alexandrina and The Coorong. Lake Alexandrina sits between the Murray Mouth and the river proper, and is home to a wide variety of migratory and wetland bird species. The Coorong is a favourite place for four wheel driving, canoeing, hiking, camping, fishing and bird watching. The Spirit of the Coorong Cruises offer spectacular two, four and six hour cruises from Goolwa, with magnificent seascape and wetlands views as well as the natural wildlife of Coorong National Park. The Murray River snakes through these waterways before flowing through the Murray Mouth at Goolwa and into the Southern Ocean.Other noteworthy townships include Pinaroo in the Murray Mallee area and the river towns of Berri, Loxton, Wongulla, Moorook, Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend. These picturesque towns, many on the banks of the meandering Murray River, offer the traveler a wonderful snapshot of Murray River living. Houseboats are readily available for hire along the Murray, offering transport, accommodation and a unique way to experience the river. As with much of the south and east of South Australia, the Murray River country has great food and wine. Add to that a fantastic fresh food culture, underpinned by great seafood and local produce that is showcased with pride by some of the South Australia's finest dining experiences.
