The iconic Murray River is this country's longest river and, with an overall catchment area of one seventh of Australia's land mass, it is also one of the most picturesque locations to be found. Ancient red gum trees line the river banks providing the perfect habitat an amazing array of bird life. And, for every keen angler, the river is home to the Murray Cod, the largest freshwater fish in Australia.The state border between Victoria and New South Wales meanders along with the Murray River and creates many 'twin' towns, the largest being Albury - Wodonga. From heritage buildings to paddle steamers, fine dining and a lively arts culture to an army museum, Albury - Wodonga has much to do, whilst that gentle river quietly flows.Down river is Corowa - the birthplace of Federation in Australia. Steeped in history, the town is well known for the intact Federation-style buildings, protected by The National Trust. The old courthouse was where, in 1893, 'the decision was made to draw up the constitution for the new nation'.Barooga, with 'twin' town Cobram, offers large sandy beaches on the banks of the river. For the golfers, there is the fabulous 36 hole Cobram-Barooga Golf Course.Amongst the many historic listed building in Culcairn, is the Culcairn Hotel, Built in 1891, the hotel showcases unusual leadlight windows and is truly one of the most outstanding 'country pubs' to be found.Nearby Henty proudly displays country ingenuity at it's finest. It was 1914 when a local farmer, Headlie Taylor, invented the header harvester which saw a revolutionary change in harvesting grain, worldwide. Today, the yearly Henty Machinery Field Days attract 60,000 visitors.Holbrook is home to the decommissioned Australian submarine HMAS Otway, not something you would expect of an inland country town. Howlong is another 'secret' location for catching up with that elusive Murray Cod.
