This area is directly west of Melbourne covering an area from Port Fairy to the Victorian/South Australian border to Casterton and Hamilton. Portland with nearly 10,000 inhabitants is one of the largest towns in this area. Portland has over 200 old buildings, many bluestone classified by the National Trust. If you are in Portland on a weekend, go and see the excellent handmade arts along the river at Portland's Old Town every Saturday and Sunday. Also don't miss The Portland Cable Tram which travels along the foreshore, providing coastal views and passing attractions such as Botanic Gardens, Portland Powerhouse Car Museum and the Maritime Discovery Centre. The agricultural town of Hamilton is about the same population as Portland and has a surprising amount of things to do in the town, don't miss one of the finest Art Galleries in Australia. Take a stroll through the Hamilton Botanic Gardens which were developed by William Guilfoyle from 1881, the curator of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and one of Australia's greatest garden designers and botanists. There are also the Pastoral and the Ansett museums both well worth a visit.
